Slums: Human rights live here

People living in slums experience a staggering number of human rights violations: more than 1 billion people are routinely denied adequate housing, safe water, sanitation and drainage, electricity, health and education. They face the constant threat of violence, and forced eviction. Learn about their rights and how they could be enforced to help break the cycle of poverty.
Then act – demand dignity.

Background

More than 1 billion people across all continents live in slums. These communities, where residents live, work, and raise their children, are characterized by inadequate housing, lack of basic services, overcrowding, and high levels of violence and insecurity.

Know Your Rights

There are specific rights we all have to do with where and how we live.
EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO A STANDARD OF LIVING ADEQUATE FOR OUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING – INCLUDING FOOD, CLOTHING, HOUSING AND MEDICAL CARE AND NECESSARY SOCIAL SERVICES
This is according to Article 25 of the UDHR.

Millennium Development Goals

The Millennium Development Goals came onto the world stage 10 years ago, promising some of the world’s most impoverished and excluded communities a new dawn in a new millennium. Since then, some progress has been made, but it is now painfully clear that this has been uneven, and that without increased efforts, the targets set for 2015 will not be met.

Slums – Suitcases of evidence from around the world

When Amnesty International has members, partners, supporters or staff in a country or travels there on mission, it gathers evidence to understand the human rights situation on the ground.  Watch, read, listen; and then act
